About Kos Ancient Agora
The Kos Ancient Agora contains a series of ruins dating from the fourth century BC to the sixth century AD. Amongst them are a temple, probably dedicated to Hercules, a shrine to Aphrodite and the columns of a stoa or covered walkway dating from the third century BC.
Kos Ancient Agora history
The ancient agora dates back to the 3rd century BC and was a market and meeting place for the ancient Greeks who lived in Kos. Over time, the Kos Ancient Agora would have been renovated and added to, including by the Romans. One such addition was a fifth century Christian basilica.
Kos Ancient Agora today
The Ancient Market excavation area is placed in the eastern area of Kos, to the south of the castle of Kos. As an interesting piece of information for tourists, it is necessary to add that it offers a great panoramic view.
In case of visiting the place late in the afternoon or in the first hours of the evening, it is good to know it is next to the street where Kos nightlife takes place, called The street of the bars.
Getting to Kos Ancient Agora
The Ancient Agora is located in the centre of the island of Kos in Greece. To find the ancient agora look for Eleftherias square and head through the archway that’s covered in pink flowers. you’ll find the entrance to the agora down that side road on the right hand side.
Also near by is Neratzia Castle and the Hippocrates tree, so try to fit those into your time in Kos town as well.
